DNA Project
Watkins Family DNA Project. Sponsored by the
Watkins Family History Society
We want to help you find your cousins and ancestors through a comparison of Y-chromosomes. Many of us already have compiled information about our relatives and ancestors from family members, and from sources available online, in published genealogy books, and from public records. Another source of information is carried in the body of every male Watkins -- our Y-chromosomes. When one man's Y-chromosome matches another's, he knows they must be "cousins," descending from a common ancestor.
Simply go to Ancestry.com, click on "DNA", and then "Get Started." Order the 46-marker (preferred for better accuracy) or the 33-marker paternal test. When you go to pay for the test by credit card, enter "DNA_RF4QB" for your discount code. Note: the testing is simple (cotton swabs of the individual's cheek cells) and done by mail. No blood draw, no labs; takes just a couple of minutes to do and mail back. With the participant's permission, the results can be published on Ancestry.com's DNA website, which enables you and future participants to learn if there are other participants who are closely or distantly related. Any communication with other participants can be routed confidentially through Ancestry.com.
