Colonel Robert Watkins
Robert Watkins, born in Cumberland County, Virginia.
This story is about Col. ROBERT WATKINS (1763-1805), son of Thomas Watkins and Sarah Walton. His grandfather was Thomas Chickahominy Watkins, of Virginia; George Walton, a Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence, was one of his uncles.
Robert was Lt. Col. of the Richmond County (Georgia) Militia; a member of the Georgia Legislature; inventor and planter, his plantation was "Rosney"; Augusta lawyer and co-writer of the first "Georgia Digest of Laws" (1800) with his brother, George Watkins. Robert Watkins was esteemed by his peers, and doubtless feared by his enemies. His most famous duel was with Gov. James Jackson.
Robert married his first cousin, Elizabeth Walton; both died too young. They had 9 children, but only 5 lived to adulthood.
He was my great x 5 grandfather, and one I would have loved to have known!
